Thoughts on Amazon Kindle
I am considering to buy a Kindle, although iPad seems great. Here are some of the reasons that I keep thinking of Kindle.
Reason 1. Amazon provides a free 3G internet service. You can download an ebook anywhere and anytime (However, it is not really anywhere - the location is limited to the US and major locations in the US. Thankfully, my location is a part of service areas.) I read that I can use the web in a limited way. I would like to test whether I can read and write my blogs. (I found that it is possible. See the following: http://kindleworld.blogspot.com/2009/05/working-with-kindle-2s-web-brows...)
Reason 2. I can refund the content within 7 days of purchase, which means that I can return any book after skimming through (or actually reading) in a week. (http://www.bestebookreaders.com/is-amazons-kindle-refund-policy-adequete/) I might keep books that I really want to possess and read them over and over.
Reason 3. A family can share the same content. (It isn't necessarily be a family. Amazon allow six Kindles for one account) For example, as long as family members have own Kindles, they can share books with entire (up to six) family members. They can read a book at the same time!
Reason 4. Kindle has a annotation feature. I have the habit of jotting down my ideas as I read a book. Then, sometimes I compile my thoughts. The feature seems perfect to me, especially in this digital age. The only drawback is that the keyboard of Kindle is not so good.
There's one thing that makes me hesitant to purchase a Kindle. It doesn't provide the actual book page, because the font size is changeable and accordingly, page numbers vary. It might be a major problem for scholars who often cite passages. However, it might be okay because there is a new way of citing electronic content, according to the publication manual of APA 6th edition . I will update my thoughts once I buy one. (I don't know when it would be.)
